Introduce A Girl To Engineering DayThursday, February 259:30 AM – 1:30 PMFREE EVENT! Special opportunity for girls in Grades 4 – 7
 
Join the Putnam Museum for an inspirational day dedicated to allowing girls the opportunity to discover and explore science and engineering. Featuring local engineers and scientists, as well as college and university engineering and science majors.

Why is it important to introduce girls to engineering?

Our girls can and will do amazing things with their lives, but in order for some to do that they need a chance to look inside the possibilities. They need to be encouraged by a team of mentors to dream of college and the bigger and better world they can make for themselves.

What can attendees expect at the event?

Attendees can expect to interact with multiple volunteers from local college and university teaching staff and students, as well as local female engineering professionals and our Putnam Education Department staff. We will rotate groups through activities, have a informal Q & A session during lunch and then enjoy a Giant Screen film before they need to return to school.

What type of activities will be available?

Girls will have an opportunity to explore the Science Center and work collaboratively on two separate engineering design challenges. All the activities are free this year because we received a grant from the Creativity Garden, a nationwide project of the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC), generously supported by Disney.

Why is this event important to you personally?

As a female minority, with a young daughter, it’s important to share my passion for education and spark an interest in these young women to aspire to find their role in solving future issues, developing new technology and working to better the world in which their families live.


What do you hope the girls take away from the event?

While not all the girls may end up in an engineering field, all will enhance their problem solving skills and be able to use the Engineering Design process to work through the challenges. I love the process because it supports failure as an option, in order to improve the engineers design, you’re encouraged to try again.

Why is it important for the Putnam to hosts events such as this?

The Putnam is truly dedicated to providing opportunities for people to learn in unique and exciting ways . . . to open doors to new ideas, new experiences, to start conversations. This is a National Day set during engineering week and we couldn’t be more pleased to host an event that can have such an impact on young ladies.
