A student from Galesburg has won one of Monmouth College’s top scholarships for incoming freshmen.
Angie Swan has been named one of two Admiral’s Scholars for the college’s Class of 2028. Rouya Mirzaei of Wisconsin is the other winner.
Each Admiral’s Scholar receives a full-tuition scholarship worth over $160,000 over four years at the college. They also receive a one-time $5,000 educational enrichment stipend, which can be used to explore or take advantage of academic opportunities beyond the classroom or campus.
Swan, a senior at Galesburg High School, said her family moved from Chicago to Galesburg and were thrilled with the good news.
“I was in the middle of getting ready for soccer practice when I got the news,” said Swan. “Then I texted my mom (Sherri Swan) and said, ‘Monmouth called me; they want me.’ But then I had to go to soccer practice, so I kind of left her on a cliffhanger. But it was very exciting.”
Swan was encouraged to look into Monmouth College by a high school teacher. Her plans for the future include a major in political science, a minor in accounting and playing for the Fighting Scots women’s soccer team. After graduation, she hopes to work for the FBI. “I would like to join the FBI and work for the child sex trafficking unit,” she said.
