People in Monmouth are mourning the death of a three-year-old boy in a fire Friday night.
Local 4 photojournalist Mike Colón sat down with Azazel Fischer’s aunt about the fire and the response from neighbors.
Hear Danica Fischer remember her nephew in her own words in the video above and the transcript below:
“They were all in the house, my brother was at work that night. She was at home with the two kids Illiana and Azazel. And when she realized that there was the fire she broke out one window and threw Illiana outside in her diaper.
“Azazel was somewhere, and nobody could find him. Allie threw out Illiana and tried to go back into the house and find him but nobody could. And he screamed for a long time and she couldn’t get to him so when it became too hard for her, she busted out another window and jumped out herself and was in the road screaming for help.
“Mom’s still in Rockford right now. They did a lot of camera work down her tubes and cleaning out all the soot from her lungs. But she’s burned pretty bad and cut up from busting out the windows.
“Everybody’s coming together at one time is what’s helping. Family. Family and friends and watching everybody come together to help my brother. We didn’t expect for anything like this. I’ve had tons of people donating, people have been dropping off left and right.
“He was so funny, so smart. No matter who you are he could make you laugh. He’d laugh and laugh and lauch. He loved his sister and his cousins. When they say life is short you know you never imagine it to be that short.”
